President William Ruto has retained Feisal Abass as the non-executive Chairperson of the Privatisation Commission for another three years, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to continuity in the management of Kenya’s privatisation agenda.

The announcement was published in a gazette notice dated July 18, 2025.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 (1) (a) of the Privatisation Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, reappoint— Feisal Abass to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Privatisation Commission, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 18th July, 2025,” the notice read.

Abass’s renewed term comes at a time when the Commission is undergoing significant institutional changes, having recently transitioned into the Privatisation Authority.

His reappointment is expected to provide leadership stability and ensure a smooth continuation of the agency’s reform agenda.

The Commission was created under the Privatisation Act of 2005 and is responsible for designing, managing, and executing Kenya’s privatisation programmes.

These efforts aim to improve service delivery, enhance competitiveness, and boost the overall performance of state-owned companies.

Feisal Abass brings to the role a wealth of knowledge gained from over 20 years in senior leadership positions.

He has worked in both the public and private sectors and holds a degree in economics from the American University in Cairo, as well as an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi.

He has previously served on the boards of major parastatals, including the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), Geothermal Development Company (GDC), and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).

During his time as Chair of the Policyholders Compensation Fund (PCF), he was credited with leading key governance reforms.

One of the highlights of his career includes his involvement in the listing of KenGen on the Nairobi Securities Exchange—a move that aligned with broader government efforts to commercialise public enterprises and introduce private capital into state-run sectors.

Abass was first appointed as Chairperson of the Privatisation Commission in July 2022 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

His reappointment by President Ruto reflects confidence in his leadership as the government seeks to attract investment and turn around struggling public institutions through structured privatisation.
